- Improper disposal causes soil erosion as the fertility of the soil is lost. This is hazardous as it could cause floods and contamination of drinking water. It also causing wilting of trees and withering of crops which adversely affects the economy. It also causes inflation as the supply gets diminished yet the demand remains the same. Around 45% of the surface area of India is affected severely by soil erosion. This is due to many reasons including overgrazing and water logging.
- It clogs sewage pipelines and causes flooding in streets, it prevents storm drains from collecting rainwater. This can cause damage to property through small floods taking place in heavily populated societies. The flood in Dhaka in 1996 is an example of flooding due to improper garbage disposal. Even in India the garbage collected in the sewage and drains in Mumbai and Calcutta can lead to water logging which indirectly leads to small floods taking place which causes heavy traffic jams which leads to a lot of air pollution.
- Littering indirectly harms the economy as visitors are repelled by the filthy conditions ergo they will not come back or suggest anybody to come to the country harming the travel market. Not just this, littering even causes people, especially visitors from other countries falling ill/sick and being unable to get proper medical treatment if they are in an underdeveloped country.
- Burning of plastic waste leads to air pollution as, on combustion some plastics emit poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, this also causes respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis. People already diagnosed with these diseases are at a high risk of worsening the disease which can lead to permanent and deadly conditions of their health.
- Plastic can lead to the demise of various animals as intake of plastic, blocks their windpipe and can choke them to death. This can also be seen on farms as the cattle grazing can choke if there's plastic spread on the grazing field. This can lead to the contamination of the meat we eat if it comes from these farms. Also if grains are stored in plastic bags it can lead to contamination of the grains as it contains chemicals which may even cause widespread epidemics. Many species of wildlife are on the verge of extinction due to human activities.
